Making Democracy Work

Fran Garside Award

Attention Binghamton University and SUNY Broome Students.

The League of Women Voters of Broome and Tioga Counties is offering a special award for which you may qualify. This award was initiated in honor of the late Fran Garside, a distinguished member of the local League, who worked on many local committees and task forces to preserve and protect our environment and was the Solid Waste Issues Specialist for the League of Women Voters of New York State.

The League will provide a one-time $500 award to one continuing full-time or part-time student who is enrolled in a degree program and needs financial support and can demonstrate an interest in environmental activities. The award will provide funds for school costs other than tuition with the objective of helping to maximize a student's ability to obtain a degree. This award will provide additional financial assistance and will not replace state or federal financial aid.

Criteria for this award are:

  • Students must be enrolled in environmental or closely related studies.
  • Award will be presented to a college freshman for sophomore year, college sophomore for junior year, or college junior for senior year.
  • Preference will be given to a non-traditional student.

If you meet the criteria and would like to apply for this award, please fill out the application and provide all information requested.

You must also be on record as having applied for financial aid with your college's financial aid office.

The screening committee will consider only those completed applications submitted by the deadline. The selected candidate is invited to attend our Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 14th, 2019.

The student receiving the award will be notified in April. The League of Women Voters of Broome and Tioga Counties hopes that you will consider taking advantage of this opportunity.
